Uniting primary health care and global health security for a healthier, safer world
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, funding for global health security programs has increased dramatically. While global health security is essential, there are downsides to focusing narrowly on a single objective. To meet the world’s complex, multifaceted global health needs, we must build high-quality, holistic, and resilient health systems with effective primary care delivery.

But health security and primary health care (PHC) are often funded separately, and sometimes at odds with each other. What would happen if disease surveillance, prevention, and response were built into strong, people-centered PHC systems designed to address underlying social, political, and environmental determinants of health? How can primary health care systems reinforce and complement effective response to health threats?

PATH will convene an event on the sidelines of the 2021 Global Health Council Symposium to learn about experiences and recommendations for how current attention and momentum for global health security can help advance the PHC agenda.
